Food packaging machinery is developed with the advent of new packaging materials and continuous innovations in packaging technology. China's invention of papermaking technology has historically provided the conditions for the production of paper packaging. In 1850, the world paper price plummeted and paper packaging began to be used for food. In 1852, Wally of the United States invented a paper bag machine, which led to paper machinery. In 1861, Germany established the world's first packaging machinery factory, and in 1911, it produced fully-automatic forming and filling and sealing machines.

In 1890, the United States began to produce liquid filling machines, and in 1902 it also produced gravity-type filling machines. At the beginning of the 20th century, Durand in the United Kingdom used metal containers to preserve food, resulting in a variety of canned foods.

Since the 1960s, new materials have gradually replaced traditional packaging materials. In particular, plastic packaging materials have undergone major changes in packaging machinery. The rise of supermarkets put forward new requirements for the packaging of goods. In order to ensure the fast and safe delivery of goods, containers have emerged, and the dimensions of the containers have gradually become standardized and serialized, which has led to the further improvement and development of packaging machinery.
